Weiner's Weiner: Dem. Rep's 'Hacking' Story Falls Apart

-By Warner Todd Huston

Over the last few days New York Congressman Anthony Weiner, a Democrat, claimed that his Twitter account had been hacked when it was revealed that "someone" sent a sexually graphic picture to a young woman in Washington State from his account.

The photo, a picture of a briefs-clad man sporting an erection, was sent to a young college student named Gennette Nicole Cordova who is a student at Whatcom Community College, Bellingham, Washington. This young woman once Tweeted that Weiner was her "boyfriend." No one is sure what sort of relationship Weiner has with Cordova if any. But there seems to be some links. For his part, Rep. Weiner claims his Twitter account was hacked. This does not ring true. Why would a hacker hack Weiner's Twitter account to send only one photo to some girl in Washington State (who claimed to be his girlfriend) and then just leave without doing other things?

Its far more likely that Weiner sent the photo himself. This elaborate "I was hacked" story does not ring true.

Anyway, whatever the case, many bloggers are having fun with this one. Stacy McCain has a great timeline of what has happened thus far. But this is the extent of my interest in the matter. Check out McCain's post on this one for more information.

  • We know that in this day and age there's no way the truth, whatever it may be, will have to come out. This woman will be interviewed in some way and Weiner will also have to speak on the record instead of through Twitter.

My experience with people saying their accounts were "hacked" is that they were not. This will be very interesting to watch it play out.

I'd have to agree. We'll get the truth eventually. But, to me these sex scandals are never really that interesting. If it is a Democrat, we rarely see any repercussions and if it is a Republican he's usually driven out of his office whether he is guilty or not, whatever it is. That always seems to be the end product. Even if Wiener is diddling with this young girl in Washington State, nothing will likely happen to him.

  • In reply to publiusforum:

It won't be the sex that gets him, it will be the lying. Look at Chris Lee, he didn't have sex with anybody but initially lied about that hysterical picture of him in the mirror.

If there's a difference between Republicans and Democrats it's that Dems usually don't campaign on "family values" so they aren't complete hypocrites when the sex scandal hits.

  • In reply to Jimmy Greenfield:

I see. So marrying someone and then whoring around on them is not "hypocrisy"? Interesting.

  • In reply to publiusforum:

Yes, if that were the case, that is the hypocrisy I would see. Republicans tend to campaign on "family values" so their hypocrisy would be both personal and political.

Somebody who is caught cheating but doesn't present himself as a beacon of family values and who doesn't attempt to legislate the morality of others wouldn't be a political hypocrite.

The issue of her being his mistress was actually completely cleared up yesterday by her statement in the New York Daily News. I hate to bash a fellow CN blogger trying to drum up some traffic, but really? Nonsense? At least be up to date.

I love people like you. Number one, I posted this BEFORE I saw the woman's "clearing up" of the matter. So DUH! Number two, you'd have to believe her, the interested party, with her claims to feel it WAS "cleared up."

  • In reply to publiusforum:

People do lie about affairs, but they generally don't lie about having never been to N.Y. or D.C.

"People like you"? Really? I can't with this.

  • In reply to VelvetJinxx:

PS- You wrote this yesterday afternoon, six hours AFTER the statement was published.

  • In reply to Jimmy Greenfield:

to clarify- "She may be....*and actually likely is,..." Messed up my whole damn argument..shit.

  • In reply to publiusforum:

Are you kidding me with this WTH? I'm sorry but this post is shamelessly reckless and presumptious. The title claims his story is falling apart-and yet you provide NO EVIDENCE to susbtantiate that claim. You say of a potential rx between Wiener and the young girl "...there seems to be some links"-and then offer none.

Your first smoking gun-"Why would she erase herself from the internet if she has nothing to hide?" IDK-maybe b/c she doesn't want self-serving hacks like you to post every detail of her life online.
She may be....act actually likely is, simply a random progressive who is a fan of the congressmans, and has became collateral damage from someone trying to smear Rep. Wiener. Your second piece of evidence-Why would this "hacker" limit him/herself to just one random act of cyber "crime". IDK-seems to me the intended impact was realized-people are talking about it right? Seems he/she knew what they were doing.

But thanks for your unbiased opinion.

PS-So Republicans usually are chastised & dems arent? Prob because republicans campaign on family values/self-righteous BS and then prove to be hypocrites...or simply living a life projecting their skeletons on others.
