Welcome to 'Smug-A-Palooza': a Fake Rally for the Arrogant

-By Warner Todd Huston

Think you're smarter than everyone else? Think you are more "civilized," more "adult," and more "informed" than all around you? Then your arrogance makes you a perfect contestant for the Comedy Central Shark-Jumping event with the two... well, I guess you call them "comedians"... Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

They think quite a bit about themselves, don't they?

The newest estimate of the crowd size was around 200,000. That is a good, large number to be sure. But it is still far, far less than Beck drew and it must be pointed out that with these "comedy" guys they had to get two of them together to get that numbers.

Me, I've always felt sorry for the "tragically hip" folks out there like those that fall for Stewart and Colbert. They are such mindless conformists.

Here is the best quote I've seen on this national disgrace that was the Stewart/Colbert rally:

You want some media criticism? Try this: Think how much better informed we would be as a nation about the monumental election in two days if members of the press had spent half the time reporting and writing about the issues and candidates instead Stewart, Colbert and their exercise in ego on the mall -- their effort to prove they can draw as big an audience as Beck.

What an apt description and a sentient observation!

This was by the Baltimore Sun's TV critic David Zurawik, a guy I usually disagree with.

Just an FYI - this rally had more than twice the number of Beck's. Official numbers were 215000 vs 87000. So even if you take into account that there are two of them vs one of Beck, they still have had a larger per-person turnout. Not quite the picture you have painted here.

I think you should spend more time watching their shows and listen to Stewart's closing speech of the rally. Much more intelligent than some of what you have written above, especially more valid than your 'favorite quote'

Yes, I am a big fan of both of them. But, to provide balance, I also am a fan of Bill O'Reilly. Now there's a man who will speak his mind, no matter who it offends. Beck I am not as much of a fan of.

It is interesting to note that you participate in the mindless bashing that Stewart and Colbert were rallying against. To label an entire demographic of people as 'mindless comformists' must bring you great comfort, and let you write off their points and issues raised as nothing of importance. I saw a stat, which I can provide links for if you don't feel like googling it yourself, that something like 85% of Americans aged 18-35 get their political views from the Daily Show. That is a lot of 'mindless comformists.' Donkey.

It is simply untrue that Beck only had 87,000 attendees. That is utter nonsense. You are swallowing left-wing propaganda to believe it. Even the U.S. Park District estimated that the Beck crowd was over 300,000.

  • In reply to publiusforum:

The Park District does not provide estimates, they havent for decades, airshowlive did both estimates. Due to false information that many have CBS posted their resume and step by step details how they came to their numbers. They also word for Homeland Security and the Immigration Dept. In addition you can see satellite imaging of both rallies shows the difference, also the DC Metro had the highest number of commuters on a Saturday since 1971. These are all facts you should look them up.

Neither FOX nor Beck has offered any scientific bases for their "facts" except to just generally say there were 300,00+.

  • In reply to mugatu:

Well, if you claim there's no "scientific basis" then there is nothing to say that estimate of 300,000 are wrong.
