Tonight’s Chicago metro edition of Public Affairs features Marilyn Katz, President, MK Communications, advising Mayor-Elect Lightfoot, via her discussion with show host Berkowitz,  on how to fix Chicago's problem areas.

Katz, however, gives the City very high marks in the world city competition.

Show host Berkowitz, in a change of pace, took a back seat to his take charge guest and took copious notes on Marilyn’s advice.

The program airs tonight at 8:30 pm in 24 Chicago Metro North and Northwest suburbs:

--on Comcast Cable Ch. 19 in Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates, parts of Inverness, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northfield, Palatine, Rolling Meadows and Wilmette and

--on Comcast Cable Ch. 35 in  Arlington Heights, Bartlett, Glenview, Golf, Des Plaines, Hanover Park, Mt. Prospect, Northbrook, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Schaumburg, Skokie, Streamwood and Wheeling.

The program also airs in Evanston twice daily, 8:30 am and 8:30 pm on Cable Ch. 6, starting this Thursday and continuing thru Monday.

You can also watch the show featuring Katz, 24/7, by clicking here.

Marilyn and her consulting firm handled media issues for the late Mayor Harold Washington during his Mayoral campaigns and consulted with him during his Mayoral tenure on a variety of strategic, media, communications, planning and program implementation issues (1982-87).

Marilyn and her firm also consulted with Mayors Richard M. Daley and Rahm Emanuel on similar issues to those listed above. Most notably, in light of the current focus on unequal neighborhood economic development, Ms. Katz and her firm improved, radically, safety, affordable housing and economic development in Pullman, Woodlawn and Bronzeville.

Ms. Katz discusses and debates with show host Berkowitz:

  1. How to reduce homicides in Chicago (including her support for bringing in William Bratton as Police Superintendent).
  2. How to improve education at CPS, especially reading levels (and including whether school choice and competition are important mechanisms to do that).
  3. How to improve Chicago’s financial mess of $50 billion dollars in unfunded pensions (including whether IL should amend its Constitution to allow the State and its municipalities to decrease pension benefits) and
  4. How to turn around the worst neighborhoods (In terms of current public safety data) on Chicago’s south and west sides.

Katz and Berkowitz also debate and discuss some other people who might be best suited to head up these “Fix Chicago efforts,” in all of the aforementioned public policy areas.

Jeff,I'm a blogger on ChicagoNow. 33 years with CPD. I can tell you why Marlyn Katz 's recommendation to bring in the esteemed much traveled William Bratton to Chicago for the top Cop job would be another Garry McCarthy disaster. I will give you a clue. McCarthy was Brattons pet in New York. This is not the forum though. Maybe we could talk or email. I will fill you in.
