Jana Schneider: “Do it with love,” reflects each dancer’s interpretation, but it is like “Going out, teaching, doing choreography, performing and just giving it your all... to be powerful within your own self…” Five Foster Dance Studios / Ronn Stewart guiding principles: No. 1-- Keep going...and then-- Remember why you are here and Do it with Love.
“Do it with Love,” by buying tickets to the Foster Dance Studios’ winter show, Saturday, Jan. 13 (Together Unique, 2 pm and 7 pm, Music Institute at Nichols Concert Hall, Evanston, IL).
Evanston edition of Public Affairs featuring Jana Schneider and Foster Dance Studios:
The Evanston edition of Public Affairs features Jana Schneider, Foster Dance Studios' ("FDS") Interim Artistic Director. The program is now airing daily in Evanston thru Jan. 15 at 8:30 am and 8:30 pm on Comcast Cable Ch. 6 [Evanston Access TV]. [See, below, for upcoming additional airings of this show in other geographic areas]
The show featuring Schneider and Foster Dance Studios gives viewers a sense of modern contemporary dance, especially as it relates to (a) dance instruction for children and young adults, (b) dance concerts and performances and (c) life lessons.
Foster Dance Studios is located just north of downtown Evanston and just west of the Northwestern University Campus at 915 Foster St., about 100 yards west of the Foster stop on the purple line (AKA the Linden L) in Evanston.
We start tonight's show by asking Miss Jana, as many of her young students call her, if dancers have to deal, from time to time, with the equivalent of missed blocks and broken plays, as do football players.
Ms. Schneider, a playmaker in her own right, grasped the analogy instantly, picked up the ball and scored quickly.
Spirit and vision of Foster Dance Studios:
No doubt, the late, great choreographer, dancer and leader of the improvisational or interpretative approach to dance, Ronn Stewart, who passed away at 42 on September 30, 2017 would tell us that when you dance and do choreography with love-- you feel the dance and music-- and communicate the message of dance with a visual and philosophical clarity.
But, what was unique about Stewart is that when he danced he combined a classical training and mastery of dance technique with his personal, improvisational and interpretative feelings and emotions. It is that combination-- that legacy of Stewart- that is now uniquely the spirit and vision of Foster.
Indeed, this is what Schneider tells us, in essence, during tonight's show. The muscles, tone, style, mastered techniques and visuals may be on the outside. But, the power, feeling and emotion come from within. So, now it is up to Schneider and many of her colleagues on the Foster faculty, including (but not limited to) Graca Sales- Joffrey classical ballet master and principal coach; Sarah Goldstone- Foster Dance Studios' co-founder, majority owner and Associate Artistic Director, David Maurice-Interim Artistic Director at the Cocodaco Dance Project and Kathryn Ebert- Foster Executive Director, co-founder and minority owner to carry on the Stewart tradition, as they lead instruction and performance at FDS and the Foster Companies.

Schneider: So, we have five main—we call them our studio companies, that are divided up by age, a little bit by level- so we have five company colors: pinks, oranges, blues, purples and red. The students are required to take a certain number of classes to acquire various technical skills, to develop their voice-- and we... do a big show at the end of each semester.
Berkowitz: So, you have a show coming up. Berkowitz: ...
