Laurel Harbridge: ... you are right that [Senator] Cruz and others ... do have some power because they are needed, but what they have ... is power to block; they don’t have power to move legislation forward...
Tonight’s City of Chicago edition of “Public Affairs with Jeff Berkowitz,” features Northwestern University political science professor—Laurel Harbridge. The program airs throughout the city of Chicago at 8:30 pm on Cable Ch. 21 [CANTV].
Professor Harbridge debates and discusses with show host Berkowitz who was responsible for the federal government shutdown, the shutdown's winners and losers, the significance of the federal debt limit and its extension, trends in the last thirty years of bipartisan legislation being passed in the U. S. House. how political and policy making interests of the Democratic and Republican national parties may diverge and much, much more.
Laurel Harbridge: An important thing to note, though, about these individuals who are pivotal and you are right that [Senator] Cruz and others in his position do have some power because they are needed, but what they have power to do is power to block; they don’t have power to move legislation forward. So, they can’t pass legislation on their own. And, they can’t even necessarily get what they want—
Jeff Berkowitz: Well, eventually, [Senator Cruz] has to start making compromises—
Laurel Harbridge: Right,
Jeff Berkowitz: If he starts doing that, then he can pass legislation because he starts logrolling, as they call it, right?
Laurel Harbridge: Right, if he- they- make compromises and get others on board, but just on their own-- all they can do is block
Jeff Berkowitz: Well, he has almost [started that], he’s not going to block or slow down things in the Senate [on the proposed October 26, 2013 deal to resolve the Fed Government shut-down].
Laurel Harbridge: Right.
Jeff Berkowitz: So, [Senator Cruz] has started on this compromise process- some would say he has started selling out.
Laurel Harbridge: Right.
Jeff Berkowitz: Has he?
