Policy Institute's Tillman closes the door on a run for Governor in 2014 but leaves it open for 2018: Berkowitz w/Tillman on Cable/Web

John Tillman, CEO of the Illinois Policy Institute, shuts down the rumors of his interest in the 2014 Governorship by telling Public Affairs show host Jeff Berkowitz, unequivocally (in this week's regular suburban edition of  "Public Affairs,") that he will not run for Governor in 2014. However, Tillman keeps the door open for a 2018 run.

Likely 2014 Republican Primary Gubernatorial candidates State Senators Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and Kirk Dillard (R-Westmont) and  State Treasurer Rutherford (R-Pontiac) can breathe a little bit more easily with Tillman taking himself out of the race.  Like Barack  Obama in the 2004 U. S. Senate Democratic Primary did, Tillman could distinguish himself from his competitors by arguing he knows the issues, he has a vision and he speaks out.  It turns out those traits are much rarer in politics than one would think.

For example, to what extent have Brady, Dillard and Rutherford really spoken out on state employee pension reform, education reform, taxes and spending?  Do you know their philosophy on economic liberty and free markets?  Have they given you a detailed alternative budget for 2013?  Have they been pounding home their views on these and other issues for the last five years?  Of course not, but Tillman has done all of that.

Tillman also has the skills, business and conservative networks, and Fortune 500 contacts to be a powerhouse  political fundraiser and to put together quickly, a strong statewide- team to support a run for Governor.  Can any other likely candidate for Governor in the 2014 Republican Primary say that? Yes,you say? Who would that be? Go ahead, try to make the case with a comment to this post.  As Clint used to say, go ahead-- make my day.

Brady, Dillard and Rutherford still have a few other 2014 possibly strong candidates to worry about in the 2014 Republican Gubernatorial Primary.  More about those individuals in a soon to be published post.
