Watch ABC-7 Anchor Ron Magers on cable/Web: Obama—Did he fail to deliver? Mayor Emanuel: Did he fail to deliver?

Jeff Berkowitz: ...[A]re the schools any better? I don’t think so. Finances? A little better…I’d give [Mayor Emanuel] a C. The media are just sucking it up...  Are the media slobbering all over him?

Ron Magers: I don’t think they are... Let me be clear why I said I would give him between an A and a B. Because so far, he has been willing to have the fights that nobody else has been willing to have.

Tonight’s City of Chicago edition of Public Affairs features veteran ABC-News anchor Ron Magers debating and discussing the issues with host Jeff Berkowitz. The program airs thoughout the City at 8:30 pm on Cable Ch. 21 (CANTV).

You can also watch the show, 24/7,  with four decade TV anchor Ron Magers here.

Magers on Obama's economic policies:

Jeff Berkowitz:… In February, 2009, President Obama said, “Pass my…stimulus legislation, abouot 800 billion dollars, if you folks do that…unemployment won’t go above 8%.” As you know, unemployment went above 8%, went above 9%, went above 10%, it’s still above 8%, it’s been a slow, sluggish recovery, does Obama take the hit…he didn’t do what he said he would do?

Ron Magers: I think you can make that point and while it is a fact and something he will have to deal with and I am quite sure it will be one of the Republican campaign commercials, you also have to say, “We didn’t maybe tank as far as we could have tanked and beyond that the delicate dance for Mr. Obama right now is—18 months ago I don’t think many people would have given him a chance of being re-elected.  With the economy improving that much, we now give him the chance for re-election, so the economy has taken him from the depths to the point where he is above water I think, at least, and in many polls, as you know, leading Mr. Romney, so I think he has to, in this strange way

Jeff Berkowitz: Not by much, though.

Ron Magers: No, not by much, but I think, in this strange way, while the economy is still in a difficult place, he is already riding a little, mini crest because of the economy.  Now, there are a whole bunch of other issues that Republicans are going to come and get him on and he is going to have a very tough time but I don’t think 18 months ago you would have given [President Obama]  a chance and today, you have to.

Jeff Berkowitz: Are you saying [Senator] Marco Rubio couldn’t crack into the Hispanic vote because he is certainly Hispanic, but he is not Mexican.

Ron Magers: I think [Marco] Rubio is almost essential...for Romney.

Jeff Berkowitz: To be his VP nominee.

Ron Magers: I really do. I don’t know that he’ll do it but

Jeff Berkowitz: [Essential] because of the Hispanic vote or for other reasons, too.

Ron Magers: I think for a variety of reasons.  He is young. He is energetic. He is Hispanic. He has conservative credentials in his home state [Florida], but has been a successful politician. I think he means a lot of things to Romney. I think he is a big help…I also don’t think he’ll do it.

Jeff Berkowitz: Rahm Emanuel says he is for charter schools. One year has passed. I don’t know that he has any more charter schools [than when he started]. 8% were in charter schools when he came. 8% are in [charter schools] now. It is only one year, but what the Hell has he done. I don’t know that I would give him an A [as you are].  He said the most important things were…: Education, fiscal issues and safety.  Are the streets any safer? I don’t think so. Are the schools any better? I don’t think so. Finances? A little better…I’d give him a C. The media are just sucking it up. They are slobbering all over him. Are the media slobbering all over him?

Ron Magers: I don’t think they are. Let me be clear. Let me be clear why I said I would give him between an A and a B. Because so far, he has been willing to have the fights that nobody else has been willing to have.

Jeff Berkowitz: Let’s see him win some fights.

Ron Magers: I am not saying he has succeeded at it. I am giving the high grade for having the fight.

Jeff Berkowitz: Well, I want to see him win some fights.
