Watch 8th CD Democratic and Republican Primary candidates on the Web and Cable: A choice, not an echo

Jeff Berkowitz: What do your opponents [the Democrats in the 8th CD Democratic Primary] think? We’ve had Raja Krishnamoorthi [Watch Raja here] and Tammy Duckworth [Watch Tammy here] on the show.  What do you think they think?

Cong. Joe Walsh: Raja and Tammy support Obamacare…this election, the most important in your life—is also the easiest election because the difference between what President Obama thinks and what … the Republican Presidential nominee thinks is vast.  President Obama and Raja-Tammy—doesn’t matter who it is- they want government to control more of these things.

The 8th Cong. District general election is likely to be a referendum on Obama, and Obamacare, the Obama 800 billion dollar stimulus and Dodd-Franks legislation.  Did the legislation, taken as a whole, make the economy better than it would have otherwise been? Or, did it make things worse?  Are we on the right path for healthcare and financial sector reform?  If the Obama sponsored legislation made things better and we are on the right track, the country is likely to have four more years of Obama and the IL 8th CD is likely to have its third new U. S. Representative in eight years—Democrats Tammy Duckworth or Raja Krishnamoorthi. If the Obama sponsored legislation made things worse, America will likely have a new President in 2012, Republican Mitt Romney, and Republican Joe Walsh will likely get a second term in the U. S. House. It is interesting to note that from 1969 to 2004, the 8th CD had only one congressman, Republican Phil Crane.

Cong. Joe Walsh: The teachers’ unions are afraid of one thing—vouchers, plain and simple, because that’s the one thing—

Jeff Berkowitz: It empowers parents.

Cong. Joe Walsh: Absolutely.  And, so Democratic politicians—

Jeff Berkowitz:… extending that, Joe, you want to empower individuals, in general, not just over education [but also over] healthcare decisions, you think [individual citizens] can make those decisions best, that’s why you’re adamantly opposed to Obamacare, right?

Cong. Joe Walsh: Absolutely.  And, that’s why, Jeff, this election is so important

Jeff Berkowitz: What do your opponents [the Democrats in the 8th CD Democratic Primary] think? We’ve had Raja Krishnamoorthi and Tammy Duckworth on the show.

Jeff Berkowitz: So, even the difference between Mitt Romney, who had his own Romneycare in Massachusetts

Cong. Joe Walsh: Absolutely problematic,

Jeff Berkowitz: Even Romney, you say, is better on healthcare than Obama would be. You see a difference?

Cong. Joe Walsh: Yes,

Jeff Berkowitz: …Notwithstanding what Romney did in Massachusetts.

Cong. Joe Walsh: Again, a mistake what Romney did in Massachusetts?  I am not going to sugarcoat that.  But, understand—

Jeff Berkowitz: So, where is the difference?

Cong. Joe Walsh: Because Mitt Romney in the White House will have a conservative Republican House and Senate to work with.

Jeff Berkowitz: But, why isn’t he going to … do what he did in Massachusetts—only do it for the whole country?

Cong. Joe Walsh: Because I am taking him at his word that…

Jeff Berkowitz: …He said federalism is different, he was experimenting—he never said he made a mistake—

Cong. Joe Walsh: …No, substantively, he didn’t. But, he said that decision should be left to the states.

Cong. Joe Walsh debates and discusses with show host Jeff Berkowitz domestic public policy issues, e.g., the effectiveness of payroll tax cuts, school vouchers, charter schools, the 800 billion dollar Obama stimulus program and various steps to promote jobs and foreign public policy issues, e.g., Iran and Israel, on this week's suburban edition of Public Affairs. Republican Walsh (who resides in McHenry) is in his second year of representing the 8th Congressional District, having got there in a major upset of the Democratic Party's six year incumbent, Melissa Bean, in 2010, with the benefit of substantial grass roots, tea party support, a natural, winning campaign style and a focus on core, Founding Fathers’ principles.

Walsh and Berkowitz also discuss and debate, in an offbeat conversation, the smarts and accomplishments of President Obama and several Republican Primary Presidential Candidates, including Gov. Rick Perry and Governor Romney; how qualified Obama was to become President: how qualified some of the  current Republican presidential contenders are to be President, as well as how Barack Obama got to be President; and what the major issues are likely to be in terms of deciding who wins the 8th CD general election.

Berkowitz and Walsh also draw some issue contrasts with Walsh’s likely Democratic opponent: Tammy Duckworth or Raja Krishnamoorthi.
