Kapri Bibbs Sparkled In Gildan New Mexico Bowl

Kapri Bibbs Sparkled In Gildan New Mexico Bowl
Plainfield North's Kapri Bibbs (5) vs the Plainfield South Cougars 2010

Former Southwest Prairie Conference and Plainfield North RB Kapri Lashaw Bibbs dazzled football fans during his prep career and we all knew that he was the real deal. And now a National TV Audience knows it too as Kapri Bibbs Sparkled In Gildan New Mexico Bowl, his National Bowl Game Debut. Bibbs scored 3 Touchdowns with the second one an electrifying 75 Yard Run to ignite the Colorado State Rams to an improbable comeback victory versus the Washington State Cougars.

As I write this Kapri Bibbs has just scored his 3rd TD of the game to bring the Colorado State Rams within a 2 Point Conversion of tying Washington State which saw their 45-30 lead evaporate after three late fumbles. And It's Official! After a Play Review the 2 Point Conversion call has been reversed and Colorado State broke the plane of the goal line - Game Tied at 45-45.

That final scoring drive was set up after the Rams Defense forced a 2nd Fumble by the Cougars in the last 3 minutes. And just like that - Washington State has let the Rams get back in the game after leads of 38-30 and 45-37 with about 3 minutes to play. The 2nd fumble, though, was a real killer for the Cougars as they couldn't prevent Kapri Bibbs from powering his way into the endzone to make the score 45-43. The ensuing 2 Point Conversion was at first ruled short but replays showed the Rams had hit the pylon to tie the score at 45 all. And just like that - it looked as though the Gildan New Mexico Bowl was headed to Overtime.

But the Colorado State Rams Defense has done it again - they forced and recovered a Washington State Fumble at the Cougar 24 Yard Line with 29 seconds left in regulation. After a running play brought the clock down to 4 seconds the Field Goal Unit was on the field and the Colorado State Rams can seal the improbable deal with a 41 Yard Field Goal. And the kick is up and through the uprights as the Colorado State Rams have beaten the Washington State Cougars in a dramatic 48-45 Win in Regulation Time!

Wow what a game!

But I have to tell you folks, the real winner here (besides the obvious) are all the fans and followers of the Southwest Prairie Conference because one of their very own has arrived with a Big Bang as a collegiate athlete and the former Plainfield North High School phenom did it in a very big on National TV.

No doubt the Colorado State Rams are happy to have Kapri Bibbs too as he has been exactly the sort of impact player they needed to bolster their running game. But aside from Bibbs being the offensive spark-plug that program needed, I think they have found out that their program as a whole is better mainly because Kapri Lashaw Bibbs is a quality individual who has always led with his determination and work ethic.

As such, Kapri Bibbs came into the Gildan New Mexico Bowl with the second highest Touchdown total in the NCAA and with another 3 Touchdowns today has amassed an incredible 31 Touchdowns for the season.  And many of them weren't easy ones either. Matter of fact, Bibbs was still nursing a Turf-Toe Injury he sustained in the Idaho State game in today's contest.

But in typical Bibbs fashion he was able to show the other team that even when he isn't at a 100% he can have a profound effect on the game. And I hope those watching the game today really appreciate how special that explosive 75 Yard TD Run was because it is no easy thing to do when you are dealing with a Turf-Toe injury. The pain can be pretty excruciating for any athlete.

Now in addition to being a very special and gifted athlete, it must also be pointed out that Kapri Lashaw Bibbs is a young man who works hard at everything he does, including his academic pursuits. On top of that he is also one of the nicest guys you'll ever want to meet. Always polite and friendly to anyone and everyone. So as the old saying goes - good things happen to those who work hard. And he sure has done that thus far!

So Kapri Lashaw Bibbs, congratulations on your outstanding National Bowl Game Debut in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque, as well as your selection as a 2nd Team All-American. You have not only made the Southwest Prairie Conference proud but you have helped highlight the tremendous talent that exist on its Fields of Play.

All the best!
