IHSA Football State Playoffs: The 2nd Season Is Set To Begin, But....
ESL QB Lamontiez Ivy Finds Tamaji Jackson In Flyers 41-0 Victory Over Oswego 2011 IHSA Playoffs

The 2012-2013 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is comprised of 578 "Full" Member Schools in 81 Conferences with one of the conferences being designated as "Independent." There are an additional three schools that compete in the IHSA as an "Approved," "Associate" & "Associate No Longer Playing Varsity" for a total of 581 Illinois Schools even though they are ineligible for playoffs. It should be noted that in addition to the "in-state" schools that compete, there are also a number of schools from neighboring states that are granted "sanctioned games status" and playing them count towards a school's final won-loss record.

Of the 578 high schools designated as full members, 30 are "Ineligible for State Playoffs Consideration." These teams are from the Chicago Public League's Inter-City Conferences (Inter-City 1, 2, 3 & 4). Additionally, schools found in the Chicago Public League "Chicago" Conferences (Big Shoulders, Great Lakes, Second City and Windy City) are limited to 2 Playoff Teams each, the conference winner and the conference runner-up regardless of how many teams achieve 5 or more victories.

Naturally that stipulation has led some to cry foul, especially if they are talking about a school that won more than 6 games which usually means an automatic playoff berth. And this year was no different as Chicago Taft missed the playoffs with a 7-1 record while competing in the "Big Shoulders." And they weren't the only ones. Chicago Noble Street/Chicago Bulls went 6-3 in the "Great Lakes," Chicago Sullivan was 6-2 while Chicago North Lawndale should have earned "Bubble" status at 5-4 in the "Second City as well as Chicago Kenwood who went 5-3 in the "Windy City." To further complicate the issue, the Chicago Public League had to deal with a Teachers Strike which left all but 7 Teams without their scheduled 9th game.

So are Chicago schools treated unfairly? Well I don't know think they are - but I sure can see where a 7-1 team would feel slighted as a 5-4 team makes it in instead. The Chicago Public League have 16 representatives in the 2012-2013 IHSA Playoffs as compared to the 19 and 20 they had the previous two years respectively. Then again, there are those who believe that the Chicago Public League gets too many playoff berths because their teams, on the average, don't survive the 1st Round and rarely make it beyond the 2nd Round unless they are fortunate enough to have  two CPS Teams playing against each other. Then, at least, one has to move on right? So there are two schools of thought on how many City Schools are enough and what is fair or not. All in all, though, I think the number of teams are about right given the number of schools.

But I would be remiss if I didn't say this - I am not particularly happy with the present set-up, especially the fact that conference teams are scheduled against each other too early after their season. For example, Oswego (8-1) must open against Plainfield North (7-2) in Week 1 of the playoffs. There is just something fundamentally wrong with that. And there are plenty of other "conference rematch" games on tap this weekend. I don't know about you, but the playoffs should be about teams meeting teams they normally don't in the course of the season.

So in that regard - I am not happy - at all!

But the competition will be stellar once again this year as some very good teams will be trying to win one of eight state titles available. About the only thing I that could make it better for me is if at the end of the State Tournament we take all 8 State Champions and then split them up into a "Small (Class I-IV)" and "Large" (Class V-VIII) Group and have another layer of playoffs. That way we have a Small and Large School Champion. Who knows, we could even have a High School Super Bowl as well.

Hey I can dream - can't I?

As always - I wish them all the best to this year's playoff teams!
