IHSA March Madness In Home Stretch: 3A & 4A Boys Basketball Super-Sectionals Tuesday - Finals Friday & Saturday! Complete Schedule.

The 2011-2012 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Boys Basketball Season is nearly over and if the Class 3A and 4A Boys State Finals Tournament's are any bit as exciting as the ones we were given in Class 1A and 2A, well then I would say that the Basketball Gods could only be smiling and filled with glee. The 2011-2012 Season has been exciting to say the least. But the 1A and 2A Tournaments were something special as every game could have gone either way. Of course that is all a true fan could ask for, but, for the players, I suspect it may leave some wondering about the "what-ifs" for a lot longer than should be necessary. The way I see it, every team that makes the Final Four are special and every player has a right to brag of that achievement. Let's face it - it is a long tough road getting to Peoria's Carver Arena.

It is even tougher to win it all.

There is one thing, though, that I could do without. The IHSA Regional Pairings methodology leave much to be desired. I just cannot comprehend the logic behind having conference teams face each other so soon after the conclusion of their seasons. AND basketball isn't the only sport in which the IHSA resorts to that sort of thinking. I think that that methodology is not only an unfair proposition but does a great disservice to the student-athletes who would be better served competing against different competition using a straight seeding system. But, hey, I get it - the IHSA leadership demands that we have a likelihood of crowning multiple regions when it comes to winning a State Championship as that was the rationale when the Classes were expanded.

I guess it is what it is - but I do find that to be strange logic if we are truly looking for "The Best in State" in any given sport. Indiana, for instance, used to be considered one of the best states when it came to High School Basketball, but they too have seen some of the "magic" dissipate after they expanded from their "all in" tournament. Of course this is only my opinion on the subject and in the grand scheme of things I suppose it all works out anyhow. But I wonder if another tier of playoffs involving the Four State Champion wouldn't give us all a much clearer opinion of which team was truly the Illinois King of the Hill? Now I think that that would be a great way to finish the season.

In the meantime, though, we must abide by what we are given. In the end we will still see some darn good games played. Besides, the underdogs always seem to rise to the occasion when they must meet one of the prohibitive favorites and if they have the correct irreverence towards the hype, they could win. After all, all the pressure is on the favorites. So there we have it, the IHSA's Original March Madness is in the home stretch and I foresee a great finish. I also foresee some surprises in the Super-Sectionals as teams vie for the right to play in the 3A and 4A State Finals.

The Super-Sectionals will be contested on Tuesday and the 2011-2012 Boys Basketball Season comes to an end this weekend in Peoria. Thanks for a great season!

As always, I wish all the participants the best of luck.
