Jose Aldo defeated Mike Brown last night during the World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight matchup. Aldo (16-1-0) a 5'7 145 pound Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stylist out of Rio dominated Mike Brown (22-5-0) the favored fighter who fights under American Top Team at 5'6 and 146 pounds. Brown who has a solid fight record with an array of wins including 12 by submission took on seasoned ground fighter Aldo who oddly has won with 11 (T)KOs and only 2 submissions. Regardless, most thought this would be a great match-up and the skill sets of both fighters would provide an exciting bout for this featherweight division. As a long time fan of the smaller weight classes, I had no doubt that the fight would prove to be a didactic display of MMA technique and explosively.
Since it was Brown's 3rd title defense, most thought that he would be successful again at Palms Casino Resort. But Brown hit several obstacles that clearly weaken his game as the fight ensued. Aldo's stars were in perfect alignment last night as he demonstrated the ability to control the distance, tone and speed of the fight.
