Herschel Walker, the Heisman Trophy winner admits that his mother is hoping they don't find an opponent for him in his MMA fight on January 30th. Too late, his fight was solidified last Tuesday when Greg Nagy was announced as his opponent. Walker and Nagy will fight on the Strikeforce card at the Florida Panther's arena in Sunrise, Florida. I have given you a heads up on this fight during this past fall, but in 2 weeks we see this 47 year old ex-NFL player show his moves in the cage.
"MMA is the No. 1 sport out there for me, " said Walker. Walker is no doubt an impressive athlete. Above and beyond his 1982 Heisman Trophy, he has played for Dallas, Philly, MInnesota, New York and New Jersey. He was known for his crazy workouts which included 3,000 situps and pushups every day. Surprisingly he has a 5th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Currently he is a student at The American Kickboxing Academy under Javier Mendez. Walker's opponent is a 26 year old fighter with a 1-1 MMA record.
Although Walker has passed the required physical given by the Florida Boxing Commission and probably in amazing shape - no doubt - it is hard not to view a part of this as a publicity stunt of some sort. The fact is, that the Pro Bowl is the day after his fight and in Miami. I am not sure if it is just smart planning on Strikeforce's part or if Walker sees this as an opportunity to be the center of attention. Walker will be donating his purse to Project Turnaround, the same charity he gave his winnings to when he appeared on NBC's Celebrity Apprentice.
