We have already addressed favorite fighters and best fights of 2009. But many do not think about who is at the root of making these 'Best of Fights' happen and creating our "Favorite Fighters.' It is guys like Joe SIlva and Sean Shelby - MMA matchmakers. Another question posed on my December survey was, 'What were the best match-ups made in 2009?'
WEC's matchmaker, Sean Shelby explains when he is matchmaking, "I have to form a line of credible athletes ad keep the line moving...Of course there are so many things that go along with that, but I'm trying to find out just who is the absolute best in the world. Not only that, but who is second best, third best, fourth best, and so on."
UFC's matchmaker, Joe Silva knows he is responsible for making fighter's careers. "I'm looking for a well-rounded athletic fighter, but the most important thing to me is record...I don't look for victims. I pride myself in making competitive match-ups. I don't care what happens in the gym," explains SIlva about his approach.
It isn't only the match-makers that have a good eye on the worthy opponents, the hard-core fans and their blogging isn't often too far of base from guys like Silva and Shelby. So with no particular order, I give you the five best match-ups of 2009 according to fans. I must say I agree with these choices. Keep in mind, the outcomes are irrelevant, but rather the anticipation and eagerness for the MMA world to see these 5 sets of men walk into the cage because they 100% deserved to grace each other's presence.
