In 2016, 8-year-old Annie Rose wrote a viral letter to Hasbro, asking #WheresRey in Star Wars Monopoly. The Star Wars Monopoly game that was released ahead of The Force Awakens featured four male tokens: Kylo Renn, Finn, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Annie Rose, like many others, wanted Rey to be included, since she was the heroine of the movie. Daisy Ridley, the actress who played Rey, even sent Annie Rose a lovely two-page handwritten letter!
After all the grief the #WheresRey movement caused Hasbro, we thought they might want to vaporize us. Instead, they added Rey to Star Wars Monopoly, welcomed us with open arms, and asked Annie Rose to share more of her ideas. Samantha Lomow, the SVP at Hasbro who oversees the Star Wars brand, invited Annie Rose to come visit during HASCON, Hasbro's first ever convention. The Hasbro team created an amazing itinerary for Annie Rose, including a special lunch to discuss Annie Rose's thoughts on gender equality, Star Wars, and toys. For Annie Rose, that lunch was equally as cool as meeting Stan Lee. There is so much work to do in the area of gender representation in toys, and I am glad Hasbro is asking questions. Here is a photo gallery recap of our HASCON adventure, with more details in the photo captions.
