Saratoga Bankroll Day 12

In a partnership with Thorofan, we'll be offering Bankroll plays for each day of the Saratoga meet.   Each day, we'll take fifty dollars ($50.00) and use it throughout the card and try to turn it into bigger money.  The goal is simple: end the meet with more than we started.  A scorecard will be maintained at the bottom of the post.

We remind that picks will be voided in two scenarios: 1) the selection (or part of it) scratches and the picks are not updated to reflect it and 2) the race changes surfaces. Saratoga is famous for its pop-up thunderstorms that deluge in an hour, go away, and leave an off-the-turf card in its wake.

An agreement wasn't in place between all parties for day 1. So our piece will be a day behind the current day of the meet.  August 2, which is covered below, is Day 12 of the meet.

Day 11 Recap: When NIGHT MANUEVER scratched before the start of the day's program, that left a field of four and trifecta wagering was cancelled.  So $44 of our bankroll is unused and uninvested.  Now as for the $6 exacta box, that was  successful as it was SAGINAW over MINE OVER MATTER, with SARATOGA SNACKS third.  (Don't you wish the field stayed together?)  The exacta was played for a dollar and returned thirteen dollars. ($26 for $2).  We doubled our money on this day, and hope that August turns out better than July.

Now that we have a new fifty dollar bill to spend, let's go!

Saratoga Race Course -- Race 6 -- Sportech Caress Stakes -- 5 1/2 furlongs on turf  -- post time 3:41 pm ET

A tricky stakes for older fillies and mares that is described for turf only. Once again, we head to the $100,000 feature carded as race six with a post time around a quarter to four eastern.  Both first-time turf SILVERETTE and ROSA SALVAJE appear to be front end targets that will want early control.  I think they duel and set it up for someone off the pace and DOUBLE THE ENERGY could be the one to pick up the pieces.   Didn't disgrace herself down at Gulfstream in their turf sprints, and showed last year at Belmont she could handle a course with give (it rained on Thursday).  Trainer Rice has excelled in the past with grass sprints and this one appears geared to this event.  At a 3/1 quote, SOUNDS OF THE CITY is the morning line favorite.   A one-run closing type, she's hit the board three of the last four times in these minor turf stakes.  Like our win pick DOUBLE THE ENERGY, she won over this course last year.  And she did cash a third place check last time on "good" ground in a $60K race in New Jersey.  But she's a one-run closer that's pace and trip dependent, so not exactly the most trustworthy in the win column.  Still, she's thirteen of seventeen in the money and certainly a defensive use.  MADAME GIRY at Gulfstream was beaten by DOUBLE THE ENERGY three back at Gulfstream.  She then went upstate to Tampa and grabbed a second, then back to Calder with a fourth on Summit of Speed Day.  Certainly racking the flyer miles as she ships north to Saratoga, a course that MADAME GIRY is two-for-two on.  Second off the layoff is a point in her favor, and anything close to what she did last year makes her a factor.

Selections:

#4 DOUBLE THE ENERGY (6/1)

#2 SOUNDS OF THE CITY (3/1)

#1 MADAME GIRY (9/2)

Longshot:The above selector this time he left me a race to work with more than five horses.  So let's roar back into action with Maryland/Virginia shipper #3 LION DOWN BY ME (12/1) which acquires J. Castellano to ride.  Four career victories out of thirteen starts, and all four are at today's distance.  Looks better if you discard the two five furlong races at Pimlico that may be too short for this mare.

Day 12 Wager: DOUBLE THE ENERGY is our win pick, and at 6/1 morning line is worthy of an across the board bet.  We'll also box it in exactas with SOUNDS OF THE CITY.  At base wagers, this play would cost $8: $2 to win, $2 to place and $2 to show for $6 and then a $1 exacta box of DOUBLE THE ENERGY and SOUNDS OF THE CITY for two more dollars.  To reach the stipend, we wager each for ten dollars--win, place, show, and both sides of the exacta.

Wager:

---$10 to Win, $10 to Place, and $ 10 to show on #4 DOUBLE THE ENERGY ($30)

---$10 Exacta Box, 2-4, of SOUNDS OF THE CITY/DOUBLE ENERGY ($20)

Scorecard:

  • Day 11 Investment: $6.00
  • Day 11 Return: $13.00
  • Total Return: $212.75
  • Total Investment: $506.00
  • Meet ROI Entering Current Day: -57.95%
  • Meet Profit/Loss Entering Current Day:  $293.25 loss

Good luck!
