Arlington-Washington Lassie: Gold Edge Fights To Triumph

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS--One race after Pataky Kid won the G3 Arlington-Washington Futurity, the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie was contested. The female-restricted complement of the Futurity saw nearly twice as many horses, as certainly twice as much drama.

At the break, GOLD EDGE battled for control of the race with LA SONG, with GOLD EDGE breaking out to a short lead at the quarter call timed in :22.89. Then LA SONG got a two-length at the half-mile call that was clocked in a quick :45.65. GOLD EDGE was among the front-running pack, staying within a length of the lead throughout most of the race.  Three-quarters of a mile was timed in 1:10.68. At race's end, Lisa M. Stakes winner GOLD EDGE was the victor, edging clear by a neck over 36-1 longshot LA SONG, herself a nose clear of DANCINGINTHECIRCLE. DANCINGINTHE CIRCLE came from mid-pack to get show honors while CUSTODY came from the back of the back to round out the superfecta.  3-1 favorite FLYING RAPUNZEL finished off the board in ninth.

The race also saw YOU BOUGHT HER clip heels at the top of the stretch. She fell, unseating rider Julio Felix. As of publish time, the horse was okay and Felix was taken off-site for medical treatment, standing but complaining of wrist pain. AMERICAN SUGAR was disqualified from seventh place to last place by the stewards for causing interference that affected YOU BOUGHT HER.

GOLD EDGE, a two-year-old filly by Eddington, went off at nearly 11-1 odds and rewarded winners with a $23.40 payoff. She crossed the line a neck in front in a 1:37.96 for the single turn polytrack mile. Chris Emigh and Lon Wiggins were the winning jockey/trainer team.

Plans were undecided for GOLD EDGE's next start. Nonetheless, trainer Lon Wiggins was "pleased to win the race in front of family and friends." He complemented Chris Emigh's winning ride.  Emigh, in post-race interviews, said he "wasn't sure we were going to get there until the last couple of jumps.  I knew she might get beat but they were really going to run to beat her. She's been been training awesome and she tries her heart out."

The $2 4-13 exacta of GOLD EDGE and LA SONG paid $777.60. The fifty cent 5-13-1 trifecta of GOLD EDGE, LA SONG, and DANCINGINTHECIRCLE returned $2097.45. Dime superfectas adding CUSTODY in the fourth position yielded $5335.99. The all-stakes double of Pataky Kid to GOLD EDGE, a 3-4 combination, returned $34.30 for every dollar invested.
