ARLINGTON HEIGHTS--The Grade 3 $150,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity was a chance for locally-conditioned MUPPET MAN to build on his two prior victories. However, it was PATAKY KID who manned up and won the event. Garrett Gomez was the winning rider for trainer Tom Proctor.
As expected in the single-turn polytrack mile, MUPPET MAN broke alertly and went to the front end, carving out fractions of :23.50, :46.85, and 1:11.57 for the first quarter, half, and three quarters while maintaining an advantage of around a length. In the stretch, PATAKY KID, in the pressing pack, got a sound ground-saving trip and took control in mid-stretch, drawing off for a three-length victory. MUPPET MAN, the 7-10 favorite, held second despite the pace pressure. STORMIN MONARCHO, also in that pressing pack, held third over Illinois-bred ULTIMO TRAGO.

PATAKY KID, a two-year-old by Rockport Harbor, stopped the clock in 1:37.58 for the single-turn polytrack mile. He was the early favorite but closed as the second choice in the wagering at 5-2. Winning punters collected $6.80.
"He traveled well the whole way. He made the lead a couple of times, " said winning rider Garrett Gomez. "The second time I got into him a couple of times. He ducked out a little bit but I got him straightened out and he continued on his way."
For winning trainer Tom Proctor, the Arlington-Washington Futurity was a "race I've always wanted to win". For PATAKY KID, he has the G1 Lane's End Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland on the docket for the next start.
Meanwhile, runner-up trainer Jim DiVito offered "no excuses" and that "we were outrun".
The $2 3-1 PATAKY KID-MUPPET MAN exacta paid $15.20. The fifty cent 3-1-4 PATAKY-KID-MUPPET MAN-STORMIN MONARCHO trifecta yielded $19.05. Dime superfectas including ULTIMO TRAGO in the fourth position returned $20.64.
