Beverly D. Stakes: I'm A Dreamer Holds On

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS-- Even though the final odds on the winner were a bet-down 6-1 and the win payoff was $14.60, I'M A DREAMER kept up the streak of not-so-heralded European-based runners taking kindly to the Arlington Park turf course during the Arlington International Festival of Racing and returning generous payoffs to correct bettors.

On a pleasant August afternoon, the 1 3/16 miles $750,000 Beverly D. Stakes saw Modesty victor ROMACACA carry local hopes into the first turn and carve out splits of :23.67, :48.40, and 1:12.54 in the early stages of the race. Irish-bred UP and eventual third-place finisher JOVIALITY were close to the early pace as well. Both I'M A DREAMER and MARKETING MIX came from the second half of the field to seize control in the stretch, the former repelling the latter. Hayley Turner rode the five-year old I'M A DREAMER, a bay mare by Noverre, to victory for trainer David Simcock.

I'M A DREAMER closed at 6-1, while MARKETING MIX was the 7-2 second choice and was bested by a head. JOVIALITY (whose rider lost the whip during the race) was third and KAPITALE was fourth. ARUNA, the 3.30-1 slight favorite, stumbled and broke poorly at the start and never got involved for any of the 9 1/2 furlongs, reporting home last of the ten older fillies and mares.

Final time for the race on "good" turf was 1:55.29.

A pleased Turner, who hadn't been deeply involved prior to te Beverly D., "thought she [I'M A DREAMER] had a good chance.  She had a good attitude before the race. I think she seems to sparkle well when she’s over here (in North America).  She’s been here before.  It helped to have been here before and know the track.  Everybody is so friendly over here. "

Connections of I'M A DREAMER left plans open, citing the Rodeo Drive (nee Yellow Ribbon) at Santa Anita, a race on Arc Day, or a race on Champions Day in the UK, as an early Autumn target. Said October target is to be a prepatory race, however. The Beverly D. was an automatic "Win and You're In" qualifer to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf in November, with I'M A DREAMER securing an automatic birth.

Two dollar 2-8 exactas returned $67.60, fifty cent 2-8-10 trifectas returned $119.20, and dime 2-8-10-1superfectas paid out $237.61 to those with winning tickets.
