The first of two recaps on today's Illinois Derby Stakes action.
STICKNEY/CICERO -- Trainer Michael Reavis sent out two runners in this afternoon's Cryptoclearance Stakes, a $60,000 stakes run just before the Illinois Derby. It was TAPTOWNE, a gray gelding out of Tapit, who scored the victory. He paid $21.40 to win at went off just under 10-1 odds. Orlando Mojica was the winning rider.
"I rode the best horse today. We got into a little trouble on the first turn and but the rail opened up and we were able to get through." said Mojica.
TAPTOWNE broke fifth and was in midpack in the second flight until the three quarter pole. He moved steadily on the turn to be second at the top of the stetch. He took the lead in the stretch from SHADOWBDANCING, who dictated terms for most of the race. Winning trainer M. Reavis was also pleased.
"He's been a nice horse since we got him. He wants so badly to win."
2-1 favorite GLEAM OF HOPE got a good trip, said rider Eddie Castro to Barn to Wire. He checked in third with an even effort.
The $2 exacta of TAPTOWNE and SHADOWBDANCING (6-5) paid $150.60 and the $2 6-5-8 trifecta paid $534.60. BIG LOOIE rounded out the superfecta that paid $1730.00 for two dollars.
