Derby Dozen 4

Once again, it's time for another round of Derby Dozen.

With prep races like the Florida Derby and Illinois Derby in the books, we can now get a firm handle on who are the contenders and the pretenders.  Our Derby Dozen #1 horse TAKE CHARGE INDY is (shock!) still number one after his win in the Florida Derby. Illinois Derby winner DONE TALKING makes The Author's list too.

The Author is pleased to be a member of the "Derby Dozen" panel for WirePlayers.  Each member of the panel chooses twelve of the best Kentucky Derby Contenders.  In addition, there are comments from members of the panel.  The list is taken fairly seriously; the comments not so much and are more like, for example, "Five on Five" in RedEye.

The Author, with the aid of Wireplayers, is also providing a schedule of Kentucky Derby Prepatory Races that you can follow along with throughout the spring.

Without further ado, here's The Author's Derby Dozen.

1) TAKE CHARGE INDY

Come on aboard the bandwagon. Don’t be shy.

2) HANSEN

The best Great White Hope on the lead since Pieces of Eight.

3) I'LL HAVE ANOTHER

His moderate upset in the Santa Anita Derby once again inspired fans to dive into the liquor cabinet.

4) GEMOLOGIST

Can he overcome the training services of Todd Pletcher AND the Curse of the Wood?

5) UNION RAGS

You can throw away his Florida Derby third now, or you can throw him away later.

6) ALPHA

Makes it to the Derby, but I can hear echoes of “What did he beat?”

7) CREATIVE CAUSE

Makes it to the Derby but I still wonder if he can accelerate (unlike some other Giant’s Causeway progeny can't).

8) DADDY NOSE BEST

Quietly put together a nice run in the “B” preps for a run in the “A” Derby.

9) BODEMEISTER

He’ll need every cent of Arkansas Derby earnings.

10) DONE TALKING

He’s certainly got experience with negotiating a trip in a bulky field, but the Illinois Derby was slower than the bus I take to Hawthorne.

11) WENT THE DAY WELL

Set a course on the S. S. Overbet as those who wished they had Animal Kingdom last year will flock to this one.

12) DULLAHAN

The splint injury might be the best thing for him. It will stop fellow panelist @tencentcielo from saying how Lisa needs braces.
