Once again, it's time for another round of Derby Dozen. Spring has arrived (quite early, and with much wind). With that, it's time to get into serious Kentucky Derby Preps. This past weekend featured the San Felipe (which we previewed, and we thank our many readers for checking out) and the Tampa Bay Derby.
The Author is pleased to be a member of the "Derby Dozen" panel for WirePlayers. Each member of the panel chooses twelve of the best Kentucky Derby Contenders. In addition, there are comments from members of the panel. The list is taken fairly seriously; the comments not so much and are more like, for example, "Five on Five" in RedEye.
The Author, with the aid of Wireplayers is also providing a schedule of Kentucky Derby Prepatory Races that you can follow along with throughout the spring.
Without further ado, here's The Author's Derby Dozen.
1) TAKE CHARGE INDY
Skipping the cream puffs in Tampa Bay Derby and awaiting the bear pit of the Florida Derby. The connections MUST be Cubs fans.
He answered the “Can he rate?” question in Queens, but the rest of the field would be hard-pressed to win the Ohio Derby.
3) UNION RAGS
He answered the “Can he run straight?” question at Gulfstream, but the rest of the field would be hard-pressed to win the Ohio Derby.
4) EL PADRINO
He’s being El Stupido by returning to Florida and not staying at Fair Grounds.
Time to see in the Florida Derby how good he is in The Heat of the Moment.
6) CREATIVE CAUSE
Why must Giant’s Causeway offspring taunt me so much?
Remember what happened the last time we underestimated a horse from Canada?
Think he wins a Grade One going ten furlongs against three year olds. Too bad you’ll have to wait till August to see it.
I guess this is what it’s like to be a Baffert horse not in Southern California.
10) I’LL HAVE ANOTHER
An April 7 SA Derby showdown with Creative Cause awaits. An April 8 hangover follows.
11) MARK VALESKY
Someone had to be second in the Risen Star.
Here’s your Swaps winner. .
