Derby Dozen 2

Once again, it's time for another round of Derby Dozen.  With ten weeks to the event, and a number of February preps in the books, The Author has returned with a new list.

The Author is pleased to be a member of the "Derby Dozen" panel for WirePlayers.  Each member of the panel chooses twelve of the best Kentucky Derby Contenders.  In addition, there are comments from members of the panel.  The list is taken fairly seriously; the comments not so much and are more like, for example, "Five on Five" in RedEye.

The Author, with the aid of Wireplayers is also providing a schedule of Kentucky Derby Prepatory Races that you can follow along with throughout the spring.

Without further ado, here's The Author's Derby Dozen.

1) TAKE CHARGE INDY

The plan is the Tampa Bay Derby then home for the Illinois Derby.  Worked well for Musket Man, and it might work even better this time around.

2) ALPHA

He’ll be the Sole Survivor to move on to the Derby from the Aqueduct series of preps.

3) UNION RAGS

Say hello to improving three-year-olds.  Now say goodbye when they pass you by.

4) ALGORITHMS

With all the humans involved, it adds up to a serious contender.

5) OUT OF BOUNDS

That’s what I think of the others in Southern California.

6) GEMOLOGIST

He’s digging himself into a hole by doing nothing in February.

7) EL PADRINO

Still getting a ton of credit for beating my top pick.

8) I'LL HAVE ANOTHER

I’ll Have Another West Coast Throwout.

9) LUCKY CHAPPY

Animal Kingdom 2: Coming soon at overbet odds to a Spiral Stakes near you.

10) CASTAWAY

Ladies and gentlemen, your Haskell winner.

11) BATTLE HARDENED

I love this quality in a Derby contender. Too bad he’s not even close to being that.

12) HANSEN

He gets another chance to learn to rate in the Gotham Mile presented by Stay Puft Marshmallows.
