Derby Dozen 1

More than any other horse race, the Kentucky Derby inspires conversation.  For the casual fan, the Derby provides a chance to see pomp, pageantry, and hats with their own zip code.  For the hardened handicapper, it is both challenge and quest to conquer the race's pitfalls.

The Author is pleased to be a member of the "Derby Dozen" panel for WirePlayers.  Each member of the panel chooses twelve of the best Kentucky Derby Contenders.  In addition, there are comments from members of the panel.  The list is taken fairly seriously; the comments not so much and are more like, for example, "Five on Five" in RedEye.

The Author, with the aid of Wireplayers is also providing a schedule of Kentucky Derby Prepatory Races that you can follow along with throughout the spring.

Without further ado, here's The Author's Derby Dozen.

1) TAKE CHARGE INDY

“Has the pedigree, won over poly, and took to dirt. The latest in a long line of sneaky contenders from Chicago.”

2) HANSEN

“Let’s hope his career lasts longer than his Eclipse speech.”

3) UNION RAGS

“Dodged and weaved more in the Breeders Cup than a drunk college student.”

4) ALGORITHMS

“Had the right formula for taking down the Two Year Old Champ at  Gulfstream.”

5) OUT OF BOUNDS

“Also known as the reasoning as to why he’s not running until a week before St. Patrick’s Day”

6) MR. BOWLING

“Sounds like a new Martin Lawrence movie for the summer.”

7) ALPHA

“Only Time Will Tell if he will have a half-brother named Omega.”

8) SHARED PROPERTY

“Interested to see what the Arlington Washington Futurity winner does when Leandrone Goncalves isn’t the rider."

9) SKY KINGDOM

“For now, the best Baffert-trained horse.  For now, that means not much.”

10) JUNEBUGRED

"He’ll need to progress forward off his Oaklawn win, or the only June race he’ll contend in is the Iowa Derby.”

11) CREATIVE CAUSE

“Get ready for the next speed-impaired son of Giant’s Causeway.”

12) EL PADRINO

“Will get points for winning a name-filled two-turn Gulfstream allowance. Will not get points for not being as good as A Bronx Tale.
