It' s a long story and I am not allowed to mention the name of the female doctor or the hospital near a Big 10 university, but when our son was a day old, we almost lost him due to their massive neglect and torture. It's a parents worst nightmare come true, luckily for us, he made it through.
Annette and Ted Stenstrom were not as fortunate as us. Four years ago their daughter Moreland Grace known affectionately to them as Gigi died after 16 days due to complications of being unable to breathe on her own. Before Gigi passed away, Ted and Annette quickly began taking photos with family and friends, making footprints, and hand prints creating lasting memories of her. “We felt like we essentially made a lifetime of memories with her” says her father Ted who along with his wife Annette who now provides families with this gift to support families with memory keepsake boxes.
Annette and Ted created several fund raising events raise additional funds needed to support the program currently in operation at Children’s Memorial Hospital and to fund other area hospitals that they are trying to reach. The Disco Dash 5K is one of the events that the Stenstrom's have created to help other families in need.
On August 27, 2011 at 9:00am at Diversey Harbor in Lincoln Park you can run, walk or boogey your way along a 5K course in an effort to help The Peapod Project-named by Annette’s sister who thought Gigi looked like a “pea in the pod”. The Chicago Triathlon falls on the same day, but if you are not into getting kicked in the head and getting up at 4:00AM, then the The Disco Dash is a great way to get in a workout along the lake and help an amazing couple and an amazing cause.
It hasn't been easy, but due to the big hearts and generosity of local company Guaranteed Rate, the Stenstrom's are able to help others when they need it most. “We almost had to cancel our last 5k race because we didn’t have enough funding, and in the 11th hour Guaranteed Rate generously sponsored last years race and we were able to walk and run in honor of Gigi and all the other children who have passed,” says Annette.
