Well, I am about to be. On Monday, I received an e-mail from my friends at Gatorade asking me if I would like to come to New York and participate in special, invite only, endurance testing and nutrition assessments at The Gatorade Sports Science Institute.
My first thought was "every other writer in America must have said no," but why not go for it? This is as great opportunity and as detailed as it gets. On my road to recovery, this is the kind of precise information that any athlete can use to maximize their athletic performance. To top it all off I will have the opportunity to hang out and talk with Olympic distance runner Dathan Ritzenhein. So I am off to the Big Apple.
There will be much more to report after I go through the various tests, but here is a snap shot of what's coming up on Thursday morning.
Body Composition (Bod Pod): Identify fat and lean muscle mass.
Wingate: Measure anaerobic capacity, power and fatigue (on a stationary bike).
Estimation of VO2: Estimation of aerobic capacity (1 mile run on treadmill).
Fueling Survey: Determination of what you eat and how to optimize your intake for better performance.
Resting Metabolic Rate- Determines my resting metabolic rate, and the minimum number of calories I need per day.
