Since President Obama is going to be hanging in Chicago this weekend and we know he likes to bike (at least when there are cameras on him), the good folks at Active Transportation Alliance have offered up free entries for The Prez., his wife and kids to Sundays MB Financial Bank-Bike The Drive.
What better way to rub elbows with the folks from the old hometown than on a bike, riding on Lake Shore Drive? Now I'm not a White House PR muckety muck, but this seems like a can't miss opportunity! It sends a great message about green living, goes along with Michelle's healthy kid initiative and supports the amazing group of people at The Active Transportation Alliance.
This Sundays bike ride is the Midwests largest, recreational car-free bicycling event and the perfect way for them to spend a warm and sunny Sunday morning. If you know the Obama's, or Oprah can you pass on this invite to them?
"We invite the President and any other diplomats in the area to ride with us as we kick off summer in Chicago with a bike ride down a car-free Lake Shore Drive," said Active Transportation Alliance Executive Director, Rob Sadowsky. "We're ready to help out with bike checks, helmet fittings, all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast tickets, entertainment, and all the car-free riding they can get."
What else could they possibly have planned at 6:00AM on Sunday? To quote Michelle in a recent interview with The Sun Times "I think that's the thing I miss in Chicago is like being able to walk out of my house and go down on the lake and ride my bike -- but I can't do that here, either(in DC)." This is a no brainer.
Just in case Barack and the family couldn't fit their bikes onto Air Force 1, the gang at Village Cycle Center have offered free bike and helmet rentals for the entire first family to keep them happy and safe while they are riding.
Speaking of safety. Active Trans is prepared to ensure that the Obama family feels comfortable for the event by bringing their volunteer-lead, eight-foot bicycle trailer with a banner in place of their typical motorcade. "We'll do whatever it takes to ensure that the First Family and all families have a fantastic ride on May 30,"Sadowsky said. "Our rest stops will be stocked with bananas, snacks, and water. They will also be staffed with hundreds of volunteers waiting to fuel all of our participants."
I have a pretty cool bike carrier on my mini-van, so if they need a ride and way to get their bikes to the event, we can get everything there and the girls can watch a DVD on the way!
If you don't happen to be the President of The United States, but want to participate in this unique event, registration is still open and will be until 4:30AM on Sunday(though it's cheaper to do it now). This is a great chance to experience Chicago in a way that doesn't happen very often, it is also an opportunity to support an organization that does so much to support the cycling community in Chicago.
Online registration is open until noon on Saturday click here for details. Day-of-event registration begins at 4:30 a.m. at Columbus and Jackson downtown Chicago.
I called The White House for an official comment, but have yet to hear back. Again, if you know the president, could you forward this to him, so I can clean out the mini-van and get their bikes together at Village Cycle Center?
