I ate a salad yesterday for lunch and my body almost went into shock from not tasting chocolate! Yes, we are heading into the holiday season; it starts with the crap fest known as Halloween and continues right into New Years day with the Fried Food Bowl. If you're not careful you can "good times" yourself into another waist size.
I had a chance to sit down with Jim Luby from MonaVie and talk to him about the "super food," that tastes great and is good for you.
First of all, what is a Superfood? To me, it's a fried hot dog, wrapped in a fried pancake. Apparently I am way off base.
Wikipedia defines it this way.
Superfood is a term sometimes used to describe food with high phytonutrient content that may confer health benefits as a result. For example, blueberries are often considered a superfood (or superfruit) because they contain significant amounts of antioxidants, anthocyanins, vitamin C, manganese, and dietary fiber...
In layman's terms, foods that are really super duper good for you, broccoli sprouts and salmon fall into this category. If you are like me and most 10 year olds, there is no way you're going to eat broccoli sprouts every day, so you need a healthy alternative. Shazam, suddenly superfoods are something you can buy over the counter.
Unless your are Maya, our Yoga/ nutrition Goddess and you eat really well, you need a little extra something to get you the nutrition you need. Studies show the importance of maintaining a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and it's a simple fact that most of us do not consume enough each day. Jim tells me that MonaVie offers a convenient means of adding nutrition to your diet.
I tried it. It tastes good, like a fruity V8, but somehow cooler. It's not a "drink," think about it like a liquid vitamin that you drink a little bit of every day. It comes in bottle form, a energy drink and a gel. My favorite is the energy drink MonaVie EMV, it isn't quite as thick as the traditional MonaVie bottled drinks and tastes great. I would put up against Red Bull in a minute. Not only does it taste great with Vodka, but apparently if you drink it with out the booze, it is actually much healthier for you than the every day energy drinks.
Onto the facts.
1. What is MonaVie?
MonaVie is a simply a highly nutritious fruit juice made with a blend of Acai and 18 other fruits from around the world. Rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants, four ounces of MonaVie consumed per day is the antioxidant equivalent of 13 servings of commonly eaten fruits and vegetables.
2. What is Acai?
Believe it or not Oprah did not invent the Acai berry. Acai is a small berry that grows indigenously on palm trees in the Amazon rain forest. The size of a giant blueberry, acai is approximately 85% seed and 15% skin and pulp. For a long time, very few people outside the Amazon knew much about the fruit. Today acai is recognized by many scientists and doctors around the world as a "superfood", rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients, amino acids, vitamins, and trace minerals. In fact, acai has a higher concentration of antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetable known today.
3. What are the MonaVie products?
MonaVie
Original supports your body's antioxidant and nutritional needs. It

nature's top superfoods - and 18 other body-beneficial fruits. This

plant sterols (which studies suggest play a key factor in lowering
cholesterol), resveratol, and omega 3 fatty acids. Scientifically

Monavie products have less than 20-25% acai. If you would like to get real acai in the form Brazilians consume, check out Amafruits at www.amafruits.com. They are a local Chicago area company and sell acai frozen in pulps & purees, the most nutritional way to get acai.
