Too Pretty to do Homework? Are You KIDDING Me?

The internet has been buzzing lately about this gem of a t-shirt, sold by JCPenney.

I'll give you a minute to think about that.

Are you seriously annoyed? Good. Lots of other people were, too. They complained, and JCPenney stopped selling the t-shirt. Melissa, over at Pigtail Pals, even started selling her own.

Maybe you're not sure what all the fuss is about. After all, what's wrong with being pretty? There is absolutely nothing wrong with being pretty. Or not being pretty, for that matter. But as Melissa says, "Pretty's got nothing to do with it." No matter your appearance, you can do anything you set your mind to.

Then there's that tricky last part of the shirt, " my brother has to do it for me." That implies that boys are smarter than girls. I know if you read this blog you don't believe that!

In fact, the best response I've read to this whole mess comes from a twelve year old girl who believes there is much more to girls than meets the eye. You can read it here.

So what do you think? Is it just a funny t-shirt or a sign of the way people think of girls?

Thanks for sharing this story and my 12 year old daughter's perspective. It seems to me that all of those people who say, "It's no big deal" need to listen a little harder to these young girls. They are telling us that they're tired of sexualized and objectifying products and media.

I’m a 26-year-old who is passionate about many things, and still trying to figure out exactly what I want to be when I grow up. I love empowering young women, training for and participating in triathlons (because calling what I do racing is a stretch), and giving a voice to all the thoughts floating around in my head. Most of the time, you’ll find me running, biking, and swimming, in no particular order, training for as many races as I can cram into my weekends. I also enjoy rocking out to Hanson (yes, the band that hit it big with “Mmmbop” in 1997), watching Glee with my husband, giggling with my girl friends, and drinking way too much Diet Coke.
