Facebook: Should You Accept That Friend Request?

First and foremost: I know you want a Facebook account.  I personally think you should put it off as long as possible.  Just wait until high school!  Since I know you probably won't, I'd like to offer you some tips for staying safe online.  This is the first of a series.  Before you decide to get a Facebook account, please talk to your parents.

Oh, Facebook.  A way to connect with old friends, a time-waster, a place to post your random thoughts and pictures.  I have serious Facebook love.  It has allowed me to re-connect with old friends from elementary school, including my BFF from first grade!  I also use it to keep in touch with friends who live far away, share photos with friends and family, and follow authors, musicians, and organizations I like.

But as much as I love Facebook, there are quite a few things that make me nervous about it.  It took me a while to learn about all the ways you can protect yourself online.  It's easy to think that the only people who see the information you post are the people you want to see it.  Unfortunately, that's not how it works.  So today, let's talk about friend requests.  How should you decide who you friend on Facebook?

Remember that when you accept someone as a Facebook friend, they get access to everything you have posted.  (Unless you're using privacy settings, which we'll talk about later!)  Be careful about who you trust -- both in real life and online.
