Ah, the life of a small business owner. A large part of your social life becomes hitting the networking trail- searching for business and power partners. During your travels, you will collect a lot of information. Everyone has their cards front and center.
So what do you do when you come home with a big pile of cards in your pocket? Do you recycle, through in a drawer, or take the time to contact people and connect with them. What is your MO?
After networking for 11 years, I ended up with a huge pile of cards. One of my goals for the new year was to sort through all my cards and get on the right track.
During my sorting process, I found that quite a few people had switched jobs or moved. One pile gone.
I divide the cards into two different piles- power partners and others.
When I receive a business card I write on the back of it, the date and where I met the person.
I have a small book in which I keep all my "power partners" . Power partners are defined as referral sources for your business. For me, this includes realtors, estate people, decorators, and maid services.
The other companies I keep in another book sorted alpha by company. You never know when you will need their services or be able to share services with another person. I actually have gone back to these sources many a time. You can also keep a digital record of all your contacts. There are several different programs like ACT to keep the business cards online.
Networking is a great tool. Its a great way to meet people and develop long lasting business partnerships. Have fun and enjoy!!
