Inheriting A Hoard-Should You Sort It Or Call Junk Removal

I run into this problem quite a bit. A family member passes away and I am called in to help with the estate. It's hard enough when you lose a family member but when you inherit a hoarded home- it makes things much worse.

What should you do? Should you take the time and spend the money to sort things out or should  you call in a junk removal company and let it all go? There is no right or wrong answer to this story.

Lets talk. Either way an investment of your time is needed. And there is a cost as well. You need to make a decision that you feel will work for you.

SORTING OUT THE HOARD-By choosing to sort out the home, it will require an investment of your time and money(if you hire an organizer). Sometimes friends and family are willing to jump in and help you out.

If you have friends or family to help out on this project, be sure to make a list of things you are looking for in the home. Have a staging area for:

* Family photos

* Important documents

* Money

* Jewelry

* China, Chrystal, and other entertaining pieces

This project could take a few days or few months, depending on the size of the home. If you feel  there are valuables in the home or family treasures, it might be worth it to go through things. IN EVERY HOARDED ESTATE JOB THAT I HAVE WORKED, I HAVE FOUND MONEY OR JEWELRY!!

If you don't have friends or family to help, consider hiring a professional organizer. They can bring in a team (depending on your budget) and get the job done. They bag up all the trash. All the other items will be categorized and labeled. After the home is cleared out, the family can go through the stuff. You can also bring in an estate person to help you sell things.

JUNK REMOVAL-Not feeling up to sorting out the home. If you feel comfortable in letting it all go, then this might be the solution for you. A junk removal service will come in and take it all away. This will cost you a pretty penny(depending on how much manpower and trucks are used). I have seen junk removal services cost anywhere from 1000 to 7000 for a full home clean out.

Junk Removal services are great. I have used several of them myself. They are quick and efficient. The downside- they don't sort things. Their job is to come in and clear the home out. So anything of value will be put in a bag and taken away.

This is a tough decision. I have seen many people let their relatives home sit because of this situation. Take your time and think about it. Make the best decision for yourself and your family.
