I have been organizing for eleven years- ten years in my own business. Some days, I feel like a rock star! I came, I declutterd, and I organized. Other days I run home with my tail between my legs. Yup, I am a people pleaser! I want to make amazing progress in every project I touch. There are many different variables that pose challenging during an organizing session.
I wanted to share with you some of the most common concerns I have heard from my 10 years in business. I hope this will help everyone understand the organizing process a little better!
ALL WE ARE DOING IS MAKING PILES- When you are sorting threw misc items, that is what you do. You make piles and then relocate them to the proper areas. If the specific items have a home, then they are put away immediately. If not, sometimes they remain in area in that space until it is organized. The goal is to clear one space at a time.
Today, I was a pile making fool. After all the items were sorted, I put away as much as I could. The rest of the items were relocated to the proper rooms. They client and I will work on these in our next session.
THERE IS NO ROOM ANYWHERE-Even if your home is very cluttered its important to try and clear one area. In the long run, it will make you feel better. You also might need that space for sorting other items. So try to move things to their proper room or location.
IT GETS WORSE BEFORE IT GETS BETTERSometimes this can be the case. If there is a lot of sorting and processing to be done, you might be left with some piles. Also if you have items that are going to different places- selling, donating, or friends. As a professional, we try to keep things as contained as possible.
DIALING DOWN PAPER-I live by the bible of OHIO-only handle it once. When it comes to mass amounts of paper, sometimes that rule gets broken. I have worked on jobs where there is a paper overload and many different filing systems. In cases like this, we try to "dial down" the paper by sorting in broad categories and then go through it with the client to create files. When there is one existing file system, we try to clean it out and replenish with the paper we are sorting.
