In the wake of last night's loss to the Flames, many fans demanded a roster shake-up immediately. I'm not sure that trading one of the team's franchise defensemen is what those folks had in mind, but rumors centered on such a deal are swirling in Edmonton.
According to Sportsnet's Roger Millions, sources indicate that the Hawks are continuing to discuss deals involving Brent Seabrook and the Oilers are a team he specifically mentions as a suitor.
Looking up and down Edmonton's roster, there isn't much to be put together as an armchair GM. If the Hawks deal Seabrook, it will be a white flag trade. If anything, the Hawks need more defense, so dealing half of their top pairing wouldn't make sense during a playoff push.
If you're looking for names, Sam Gagner has been mentioned as a possible returning asset; Gagner and Patrick Kane remain great friends after being line-mates with the OHL's London Knights during their junior careers. Could Stan Bowman be interested in a reunion? If so, there would still need to be additional pieces involved to make this sensible.
For now, take this as nothing more than a rumor. The state of social media and the rabid nature with which NHL fans seek out information has created a culture where a rumor can stem from virtually nothing. Even so, we know that nearly half the NHL has contacted Bowman about Brent Seabrook since October, so this is worth mentioning.
