Theo Epstein Reportedly 'Close' To Joining Chicago Cubs
Theo Epstein to the Cubs?

No better way to return to blog writing than to report some incredibly significant news.  Multiple sources are reporting that Theo Epstein, the once wunderkind general manager who orchestrated 2 World Series Champion teams in Boston, and now irrational martyr of the Boston Red Sox epic collapse of 2011, is on the verge of joining the Chicago Cubs.

Details are still few and far between, and there is a LONG way to go before this thing becomes official, but if true this would be a monumental coop for Tom Rickets and the Chicago Cubs.  Not only is Theo a complete 180 degree transformation from the previous regime, he has a proven track record and cache that can be utilized.  Theo has been at the helm of the Red Sox through a major ballpark renovation, one which his experience and name would be used to majorly overhaul the antiquated and decrepit Friendly Confines.

The rumors started with Steve Buckley, a columnist for the Boston Herald.  Here is a snippet of what he wrote:

Two baseball sources have confirmed that Theo Epstein is on the cusp of leaving his job as general manager of the Red Sox [team stats] to accept a position with the Chicago Cubs that is believed to include powers greater than he has in Boston, with an announcement expected to be made “within the next 24 to 48 hours.”

The hangup in the negotiations has been twofold. One of them is that Red Sox ownership was still hoping to have Epstein remain with the team. The other is compensation: If Epstein is to leave Boston, said one source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Red Sox are going to want “something real.”

Whether that involves a player, money or a combination of the two remains unclear.

“But this is going to be resolved very soon,” said a second baseball source.

If the rumors are true, optimism can return to the North Side, but  it won't happen over night.  However, it is impossible to ignore the possibilities that this may bring.  Jeff Passan, lead columnist for Yahoo! Sports, tweeted the following when the rumor first came out that Theo may actually leave for Chicago.

Again, it is a long ways from being a sure thing.  Forgive my excitement, as this last season left me devoid of baseball - it is exciting to image the possibilities of Theo Epstein joining the Cubs.

For now, i'll return to refreshing twitter every 30 seconds.  #theoepsteinupdatesplease
