Organic, cage free, wild caught.....what are the best choices?

You can't always pick the perfect fish or meat but when you have a choice, try these.

Here is a list of fish that are recommended based on low mercury levels and best health benefits:

  • domestic farm raised catfish and tilipia- not imported
  • pacific cod- not atlantic
  • pacific or atlantic caught squid- not American
  • domestic shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico- not imported
  • pacific halibut
  • Wild Alaskan salmon- not farm or wild atlantic salmon
  • domestic atlantic king crab- not imported
  • American or Canadian albacore tuna- not imported
  • yellow snapper
  • no orange roughy
  • no atlantic bluefin tuna
  • no chilian sea bass

Go for grass fed beef, bison or lamb which is higher in Omega 3 fatty acids, less saturated fat and cholesterol, higher in CLA and antioxidants for prevention of disease; pastured pork; and organic chicken

Dairy:

  • best source is local farm, then Omega 3 fatty acid fortified, and/or organic
  • organic milk, yogurt, cottage cheese
  • cheese- local if you can
