Should I go Gluten Free?


Gluten free diet and products have become a popular way to diet and lose weight.  Many products at the grocery store all of the sudden say "gluten free" on the label and many of them were already gluten free to begin with.  Hollywood stars have been promoting the gluten free diet as a way to keep their weight down.  Gluten free diet can help with weight loss since you are cutting out some staple foods but you are also cutting out nutrients that your body needs.  People who have to follow gluten free due to Celiac Disease or other health problems, are advised to eat a well balanced diet and replace the vitamins they may be missing with supplements or other foods.  If you don't have to follow a gluten free diet, don't restrict yourself.  Many foods are naturally gluten free, like fruits, veggies, lean meat, eggs, dairy, beans....basically a healthy diet.  The problem lies in the processed foods; consumers may think that if a label says "gluten free," it's a weight loss or health product.  You as a consumer still need to be conscious of the foods you choose and how to read nutrition and ingredient labels effectively.  If you do suspect that you may have a gluten intolerance, try cutting out gluten from your diet for at least 1-3 months and see if your symptoms subside.  Otherwise, just eat healthy and choose fresh foods when you can no matter what your goal is.
