It's a typical cold, Midwestern December night and we were really looking to have a treat to warm us up. At the same time, I'm trying to not eat my way through December with all of the goodies available left and right.
Something relatively healthy and tasty was right up our alley. We decided on trying dark chocolate hot cocoa and believe me, it was worth it every sip.
(Makes 3 cups)
3 tbsp dark chocolate chips
3 cups skim milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp sugar
candy cane (optional)
small pinch of cayenne pepper, cinnamon to taste (optional)
1. Heat milk in a saucepan until hot, but not boiling.
2. Whisk in vanilla, sugar, and chocolate.
3. Serve immediately.
4. Garnish with a candy cane or add a pinch of cayenne pepper and cinnamon to taste. (optional)
The kids were very excited that they got not only a decadent drink, but that they were able to take candy canes off the Christmas tree to dip into their cocoa. I added the cayenne and cinnamon to mine, which is a Mexican style hot cocoa for less sugar and a flavorful kick.
This is definitely going to be my go to sweet treat this winter. It takes minutes to make and has half the fat, calories and additives than those other popular holiday drinks you can pick up at a drive through.
