My students today exhibited an unusually strong interest in the urban. It's maybe understandable, since they are studying photography at an urban downtown campus. But today they used phrases I don't think I've heard before, and certainly not with such consistency. Phrases like 'hijacking public space' (with an installation of vibrant helium balloons that all the neighborhood kids chased and played with). And 'subverting space' allowing the camera to organize and dissect it. They are interested in juxtapositions of the gritty and the glamorous. Elegance slapped up against decline. That sort of thing.
In a few weeks I'll post some of their images from their final projects and we'll see what they come up with. For now I just thought I'd make note of it. It peaked my curiosity.
