Well, I'm still here, still on the rooftop, still hoping, still praying and still needing HELP!
Today has been a a very thought provoking day. I didn't sleep well, but for some strange reason was reminded of a sailor man whose pulse would race, his blood pressure would sky rocket and his anger would begin to boil when he came under attack.
Triggered by moments of frustration, Popeye would blurt out the famous words that an entire generation has branded into their psyche… “That’s all I can stands, and I can’t stands NO MORE!” Bad grammar, yes, but what do you expect from a sailor.
Last night as I laid on my cot in the tent on the rooftop of this abandoned motel, the winds were blowing anywhere from 30-50 mph (that bothered me). I counted the number of police cars that rolled by with their sirens; there were a total of 8 between the hours of 11:00pm – 1:00am. Each time, I prayed, "Lord please don’t let this be another young person shot, stabbed, beaten or murdered in this community."
Thank God, as far as I know, at the time of this writing, no one was killed. But it did cause me to ask the question, "When is it ever going to stop?"
Being on this roof now for 8 days, fasting for 18 out of 40 days - "water" only, I've had the time to formulate a perspective and conclusion. I refuse to believe that people don’t care... I refuse to believe that as amazing a city Chicago is, that this city doesn't care... and I refuse to believe that this great nation of the United States of America doesn't care about the violence issues that are so alarming!
I believe that people do care and when given the right opportunity, will rise to the occasion. I believe with all my heart, that ProjectHood is that opportunity for people to rally together and finally say We're taking a Stand! I believe this is a great opportunity for a Rosa Parks moment...
Rosa, while living her life, took a Stand by Sitting down... all because she just got tired. I know, because I'm tired; many of you are tired; we're all tired of violence victimizing our children. Like Rosa, I'm sitting down on this roof because I'm tired of taking a back seat to a front seat problem. Hopefully, like Rosa, a movement will start - ProjectHood!
Who will STAND and BE COUNTED?
Be counted by going to www.projecthood.org and give right now!
