Southwest flies healthy

Many people make up excuse that they have no time to exercise but the truth is that anyone can exercise anywhere.  We were geared up to take part in a reality weight loss tv show called Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is airing on NBC Nonstop on Saturday and Sundays 1pm in Chicago heading to the Laguna Retreat in Orange County.  On our  flight to California from Chicago on Southwest Airlines, we found lots of ways to get fit on the plane.

Even Flight Attendant Jared helped us demonstrate some simple stretches anyone can do while flying high in the sky.  Remember to hydrate well while traveling and get up out of your seat ( when the seat belt sign allows ) to increase circulation and release tight connective tissue.  Here are a few stretches to try:

Seated Cloud Cross -

Start standing holding onto a support and cross one heel over the knee.  Bend from the hips and sit back to feel a stretch in the hips.  Hold for 10-30 seconds and repeat on the other side.  This stretch helps release the thighs and take pressure off the lower back.

IT Side Aisle Stretch Start standing with one leg crossed behind the other.  Lean down to reach the side of your thigh with opposite elbow pointing up towards the ceiling.  Hold for 10-30 seconds and repeat on the other side.  This stretch release the IT band which may pull on the lower back and glutes.

Sky Stretch

Start by bringing one heel up to you backside and reach opposite hand forward.  Press hips forward and balance.  Hold for 5-10 seconds and repeat on the other side.  This helps release tight hip flexors from long periods of sitting.

Sky Twister

Start between two seats stand and keeping feet facing forward, reach around to stretch back and waistilne. Hold for 10-30 seconds and repeat on the other side.

Flying hips Hands High

Start with one foot on the seat behind you and standing in the aisle.  Bend the front knee slightly and reach hands to ceiling.  Press hips forward and hold for 10 seconds.  Repeat on the other side.

Sivasana Sleep

Start lying down with all arm rests lifted and close your eyes.  Breathe deeply and think about the great destinations that Southwest can fly you to for your dream vacation!
