Eat breakfast - morning smoothies that won't break the calorie bank

Naked nutrition is a way of stripping away the high calories low nutrient foods and replacing them with lower calories nutrient dense ones.  You must always eat to lose weight and people who skip breakfast are more prone to weight gain.  But when you need something fast a smoothie might be the right and wrong choice.


Most smoothies are chock full of vitamins and antioxidants but they also contain loads of calories.  A simple smoothie from a local juicer can compare to the same calorie count as a small milkshake.  That said making your smoothies at home where you can control the calories is key.  Rachel Beller, MS,RD, Celebrity & Cancer Nutritionist, recommends that smoothies as part of a healthy meal be under 200 calories.  Here is a smoothie she helped develop while at Greenhouse in Boulder, CO.

2 slices of banana for flavor - 21 calories
one cup mixed berries - 80 calories
one cup Silk Almond Milk 60 calories -
1/2 cup Horizon Organic fat-free plain yogurt  55 calories and 5.5 grams protein
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract -
one packet Splenda

Makes 2 cups -  205 calories
approx 7 grams protein
1 gram protein, 1 gram fiber
High in Vitamin E

Share with a friend and add 2 eggs scrambled for a complete breakfast which includes 22 grams protein and under 300 calories for the entire meal.
