Recently I was lucky enough to make a hike with two very important people: Dr. Pam Peeke, adviser to the Surgeon General on health and the US Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin. The hike was no ordinary one although it was in a wonderful park everyone should visit.
I hiked the Grand Canyon north rim to south rim, to the bottom and back as part of Dr Benjamin's efforts to "walk the walk" on her vision for a Fit and Healthy Nation. Dr Bejmain has been leading walks and hikes across the country. From the ACSM walk in the midwest to the LA Coast, she is inspiring America to get moving.
Her motivator, Dr. Pam Peeke, is not only a colleague in medicine but a dear friend. Dr. Peeke helps many people become "Peeke performers" prescribing exercise as good medicine. Her performers have found their inner strength through training for triathlons, 5K races, marathons and the hike to the bottom and back out of the Grand Canyon.
