If you think Tyga's lyrics are offensive, wait until you hear what his name means
Tyga with a tyga!

Sometimes when I’m bored (at work), I’ll check iTunes to see what albums are topping the charts, and then I’ll have something new to listen to.  Thus was the case yesterday when I noticed that Tyga (who?) had one of the top albums.  Based on his appearance (tattoos on his face, fur coat and hat despite the nearby palm trees), I took a wild guess that he was a rapper…and I was right!

I’m fine with rap and appreciate the cleverness of the lyrics, which can be pretty impressive.  I’m also generally not offended by the language or content of rap songs, so I was up for giving old Tyga a listen (actually he’s 22, so he’s just a baby).  The first song, however (“500 Degrees”), was a bit more than even I could stomach.  Maybe I’m getting old and dowdy (as my wardrobe would suggest), but the swear count in just that first song alone almost did me in:

• Fuck* – 20

• Shit – 4

• Nigga – 31

• Bitch – 22

*Also includes fucker and fucking to avoid redundancy

Okay, so there’s a lot of swearing.  So what?  Well, the content was also a little disturbing.

Verse 1:  A bit disjointed, but I think mostly talking about all his possessions and money

Verse 2:  More money talk, now including yacht and gun.  Also, he’s apparently an art lover, which he buys straight from the dealers in Paris.  Who knew?

Verse 3:  (sung by Lil Wayne) Smoking a lot of weed and having sex with his girlfriend AND her best friend

Hook: Really cannot be paraphrased, so here you go, verbatim:

Bitch I’m all you need

Augh I say fuck them other niggas, Fuck them other niggas

Bitch I’m all you need

Augh, I’m the hottest nigga, all I do is turn up, bitch 500 degrees

Augh, I say fuck them other niggas, Fuck them other niggas

Bitch I’m all you need

Augh, I’m the hottest nigga, all I do is turn up, bitch 500 degrees

And the worst part is that the music that goes along with it isn’t anything special, so it’s really just a “song” loaded with profanity and some offensive topics (which I’m probably not communicating all that effectively here, but trust me).  What is the point?  I literally don’t get it.

Since I was previously unfamiliar with Tyga, I did a quick look up on him.  I was curious what Tyga stood for, correcting speculating that it is not his real name.  Maybe the gangster way of saying tiger?  I was actually kind of on track.  His mom used to call him Tiger after the famous golfer because she thought their appearances were similar.  When Tyga entered the world of entertainment, he realized his birth name (Michael- yawn) was not going to cut it, so he decided on a variation of his mom’s nickname.  According to several sources I read, Tyga stands for “Thank you God always”.  OH REALLY?  He’s going to use an acronym thanking God as part of his name and then sing songs like “500 Degrees”?  No way, THAT crosses the line even more than the song itself, in my opinion.  I'm pretty sure God doesn't want any thanks for Tyga's blunt that's the size of Oprah (wow!).

I’m not giving Tyga any more of my time, but maybe soon you’ll be hearing his first single (“Dope”) on the radio, which would require the granddaddy of all editing projects to make safe for the airways.

Aaaand it’s official: I’m old and cranky.
