On the set this past weekend-I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Teedra Moses-songstress and songwriter extraordinaire...and we had the chance to talk about her career, her recent signing to Maybach Music and her live performance at Shrine. Decked out in a very swanky dress-originally designed just for this show-she didn't not disappoint-both on and off stage. And here's a bit of what she had to say...
So Teedra you're here to rock the Shrine tonite?
Yes, we are. I've got my boys Jay Black with me and the house band. We're going to give it to them.
How did your musical beginnings get started?
I started making music out of a need to make money actually. And from there I fell in love with it. People started to enjoy it and I started writing for others and it kind of spiraled from there.
Were you an artist/writer or in fashion when it all began?
I started off as a wardrobe assistant to my best friend who is now a stylist-Nonja McKenzie. And who also made my dress that I'm wearing tonite-she makes all of my dresses I wear on stage. We started off together in fashion and from that I I didn't want to do that anymore and I went into songwriting and singing. People liked what they heard when I was shopping around my demos and would ask for records-and I would give them way-because what's the use of holding on to them when you can make more.
What's the connection between you and Maybach Music-you're from New Orleans correct?
I'm from New Orleans-yes. But I currently reside in Miami-which is where I connected with Mr. Rick Ross. And I am now signed to their label as the first R&B singer they have.
Your upcoming album is set to be released when?
It will be released next year and it will be called "The Lioness".
What can your fans expect from the new album?
They can expect 2012 Teedra-'the lioness'. You, what I did before-evolved.
And for your performance tonite at Shrine-what is your live show like?
It's definitely going to be hot! I'm going to bring an energy on to the stage where you'll feel like you're in my living room. It's very intimate. And it's not very contrived. Even though it's rehearsed and we know which songs we're going to sing-my personality is whatever I feel at the moment.
Do you have any musical influences?
Yes, I do. I love Prince. Prince is one of my greatest musical influences. His music is an experience-it's not like just music. His music puts you in to a certain category-a certain lifestyle when you listen to his music. I also love Mary J. Blige, Angela Winbush, Patrice Rushen…I go going forever….Stevie Wonder….and of course from Chicago Lupe and Kanye.
Teedra Moses from me to you…keep doing your thing!
