It was pandemonium Saturday at PHLI Worldwide Hyde Park for the rising hip hop star-Diggy Simmons-son of industry icon Rev Run of RunDMC. It was surprising to see such a large turnout of extremely excited fans for the 16 year old rapper. He was in the market promoting his debut single "Copy and Paste" just before performing at the House of Blues as part of the 106 & Park “Closer To My Dreams Tour”. Very mature and humble with respect to all the attention, I had the opportunity to speak with him briefly about his current rise to fame and his development as a new artist.
Diggy, the crowd out here is going wild...did you expect this sort of reaction?
Honestly, no man. I'm just taking it one day at a time with the fans and everybody that is supporting me. Honestly, I never know what to expect. It's incredible the turnout and I just want to thank everybody. I'm just here promoting my new single and will be performing tonite at the House of Blues and I want everybody to enjoy themselves and have a good time.
Let's talk about your new single "Copy and Paste" what was the inspiration for this new track?
Copy and Paste is the first single on my debut album. It was a theme song an anthem for original people to copy and paste their swag and style.
How long have you been working on your craft?
Well, I have been going at it for a while now. I released my first youtube single in 2009. Lately, I have been really focusing on writing stuff down and getting better. And I put out my first mixtape this summer. People may have thought that I'm new and just got put on-but it's been a grind, I have been working on this a long time. Even before my album, I was working on mixtapes just made me get better.
Now how would you describe your style?
Man, it's just me. You know, all the way down to the things that influence me musically since this point is how I feel, from my beats selection to lyrics-I just keep it real honest.
The saying goes like father, like son...this kid has a lot of Run. For the first track off his debut album, "Copy and Paste"-he's got a million dollar swag!
