fashion show for one of the hottest Chicago based and self-taught
designer-Borris Powell. Presenting his Fall 2010 collection I was

Who is Borris Powell the Designer?
Originally from Alabama, I just consider myself a guy who loves beauty.
I love people and I love gowns to dress these people. I am very
passionate and have passion in everything I do.
What are your Inspirations?
My main inspiration is my mother-she is my lifetime muse. My dear
friends keep the youthfulness in my work. I am also inspired by the
fabrics I choose to construct my gowns-my favorites are cashmere, silk,
chiffon and satin. And my most recent collection-"The Rise of the
Empress" was inspired by a trip I took to Rome.
How does your background influence your fashion?
Coming from the South the rich colors that you find in the landscapes
there are expressed in the materials I use for my collections. I really
love the Fall collections because of the colors of this season. I
consider my designs-conservative, reflecting the conservative values you
find from the South.
What makes you unique?
What makes me unique is that if you met me on the street you would never
think I do what I do. I stay true to being myself.
How has the City of Chicago influenced your work?
I would have to say the freedom of expression you find here-influences
my designs. And even more the local fashion industry has been very
supportive of my work-which allows me to be free to create with few
