Reality Show

I was finishing up a financial workshop at a Chicago area library, when I received a call from  Los Angeles. "Hi Matt!", we'd like for you to consider a casting call for a reality show based on personal finance and investing. "Yeah right!", I said, then hung up.  I assumed that it was one of my friends playing a practical joke. HA!

Seriously, one week later, I was on a Skype interview with a casting director and a few weeks after that, I was chosen to represent Chicago in a national personal finance reality show on MSN Money sponsored by TD Ameritrade.  The name of the reality show is called The Invested Life

What is "The Invested Life"?

"The Invested Life" is a first-of-its-kind online reality series featuring real people facing today's most common money concerns and their journey to take control of their finances.

What makes "The Invested Life" so unique?

"The Invested Life" is more than a "TV show." It's an interactive, engaging experience for people who want to take control of their finances.

  • Relateable - "The Invested Life" highlights ordinary people - from bachelors to new families to soon-to-be-retirees -facing some of today's most common financial challenges.
  • Educational - Each cast member on "The Invested Life"is paired with an independent financial expert and given advice and tools that viewers can use.
  • Innovative - "The Invested Life" includes a unique community experience that encourages viewers to engage with cast members, learn from the shared experiences and take action on their own.
  • It's "NOW" - Financial planning needs change with the markets and the economy, and in "The Invested Life", viewers can see the impact of the changing environment on cast members and their journeys.

Money can be difficult for many people to discuss. This is the first program to look at these emotional issues and offer realistic, sustainable solutions that viewers can follow in their own lives.

What kinds of people are cast in "The Invested Life"? Isn't this just another reality series?

"The Invested Life" highlights ordinary people - from bachelors to new families to soon-to-be retirees - who are facing some of today's most common financial challenges. Topics like debt management, college saving, retirement planning, taxes, real estate and smart investing are all covered.

What can viewers learn or take away from "The Invested Life" that they couldn't find elsewhere?

Each cast member on "The Invested Life" is paired with an independent financial expert and given advice and tools that viewers from all walks of life can use to take control of their finances. Topics like debt management, college saving, retirement planning, taxes, real estate and smart investing are all covered.

Money can be difficult for many people to discuss. This is the first program to look at these emotional issues and offer realistic, sustainable solutions that viewers can follow in their own lives.

How were financial experts and financial coaches selected?

The independent financial experts featured in "The Invested Life" were selected because they had the following characteristics:

  • Established credibility - Self-made business success, Fortune 500 business experience, topic-specific work experience (e.g., tax accountant), etc.
  • Track records of success - Large client base or assets under management, working with or serving as senior management, industry recognitions/honors
  • Specific areas of expertise--e.g., retirement, smart investing, wills/trusts/estate planning, debt/ budge management, taxes, small business, real estate
  • Exceptional credentials - Established audience (print, broadcast and/or digital), degrees and
  • industry certifications (i.e., Series 7, CFA, CFP), published author

Why not just create another traditional TV show, like The Biggest Loser?

"The Invested Life" takes a unique, online approach because finance is real-time. Financial planning constantly changes with the markets and economy, and that doesn't fit a traditional TV format with a concrete beginning and end.

This approach allows viewers to immediately see the impact of the changing environment on cast members and their journeys. It's interactive and engaging, versus voyeuristic.

The taped content is only one piece of the programming - it's meant to spark the conversation, not be the conversation. Viewers can follow or participate in the ongoing community conversation as a means to help them along their own financial journeys.

I will post all the "webisodes" here on my blog as well as my "video blogs" as I take certain aspects of the show and give it greater details.  If you have comments, thoughts, suggestions, I'm ALL EARS as we build up a Money Smart community and truly live together, an Invested Life!
