If a volunteer pumpkin growing along the front gate of my South Loop house at Roosevelt and State wasn't crazy enough...well, now I've got volunteer tomatoes growing there, too. And on the east side yet!
At the moment, the tomatoes are fairly small and very green. But Bruce says he thinks they're Romas. Whether they ripen is anybody's guess. Bruce says a lot of amateur tomato growers' tomatoes never ripen. And my tomato growing is about as amateur as it gets. Since I didn't even plant them.
How the heck did they start growing there? Bruce says someone probably discarded the remnants of a hamburger on that spot. Which is quite possible because I often have a lot of detritus that lands along my front fence.
Any other ideas? And no, a dog did not eat a tomato and poop there…. Or did one?
