After we left one of our favorite restaurants last night--City Tavern on the 1400 block of South Michigan Avenue--where we'd just indulged in, among other things, some pickled fiddlehead ferns, Bruce pointed out as we walked along the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue that two of our favorite places appear to be growing their own produce in flower boxes outside on their sidewalk patios. Gioco's--an Italian favorite of mine--is definitely growing oodles of leaf lettuce. And Flo and Santo's--a great pizza, sandwich and pierogi (yes, that's right, pierogi) joint with a great new beer garden is growing its own peppers.
"I touched a piece of lettuce," Bruce said. "I hope they wash it before they use it."
All I could think of was where the ferns we just ate were grown.
